Dr. Chen attended the University of California in Berkeley, California, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in molecular and cell biology. He then completed his Doctorate of Medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine in Missouri. To further his medical expertise, Dr. Chen completed a demanding general surgery residency at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Kentucky. In addition to his certification through the American Board of Surgery, he also holds certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Trauma Life Support.
Dr. Chen helps improve the health and lives of others, even beyond his medical practice. Through the Tar Wars initiative, he taught tobacco prevention and risk factors to elementary students at St. Louis-area schools. Through Sun Protection Outreach Teaching by Students (SPOTS), Dr. Chen also provided sun protection and skin cancer prevention education to adolescents in the St. Louis-area school district. He also dedicated his time by volunteering at Health Resource Center, a free clinic in North St. Louis, where he helped patients manage their health. Dr. Chen is fluent in both English and Mandarin.

Patrick Coates, MD, FACS, is a board-certified general surgeon specializing in bariatric surgery. With over 4,300 surgeries to his name, he serves as the Bariatric Program Medical Director at Central California Surgery, with branches in two locations: one in Stockton, California and another one in Modesto, California.
Since completing his general surgery residency through the University of California School of Medicine, San Francisco, Dr. Coates has gained extensive experience in general surgery and weight loss surgery.
He has over seven years experience conducting bariatric surgery, including laparoscopic gastric bypass, vertical sleeve gastrectomy, revision and duodenal switch surgeries.
Dr. Coates has earned positions as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and as a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), American College of Surgery, and the Stanislaus Medical Society.
