Following the internship, he completed his general surgery residency at Mercy Catholic Medical Center in Philadelphia, a program affiliated with Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Carignan began his career taking premed courses at the Instituto Cuahutlatohuac and the Universidad Autonoma de Baja, California. He went on to earn his medical degree at the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California. Following the completion of his degree, Dr. Carignan pursued his internship at Hospital Generla in Tijuana. He then undertook social service and mission work in the Tijuana area.
Dr. Carignan completed an additional internship in general surgery at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He then finished residency training in general surgery at the University of Minnesota, VA Medical Center, and the University of Arkansas for Medical Science in Little Rock.
Dr. Carignan rounded out his training with a fellowship at the University of Alabama, University of Alabama Hospital, Vascular/Endovascular Surgery in Birmingham, Alabama. He is currently pursuing his Masters of Business Administration at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
