Dr. Vikas Varma holds an appointment at the Icahn School of Medicine, where he is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Spine Surgery in the Department of Orthopedics. He is also an attending spine surgeon at Mount Sinai Medical Center of Manhattan. He received his undergraduate bachelor’s degrees from Cornell University, where he was a 4-year Division I athlete. He then received his doctorate in medicine from the University of Maryland prior to matriculating to the University of Connecticut, where he completed a surgical internship followed by a residency in Orthopedic Surgery, serving as Chief Resident. He was then selected as a fellow in the San Diego Spine Fellowship, under the direct tutelage of Dr. Behrooz Akbarnia, a world-renowned spine surgeon, and former president of the prestigious Scoliosis Research Society, the leading international society for the study of complex spine conditions. During his fellowship year, Dr. Varma treated many domestic and international patients with complex and rare spinal conditions in both the adult and pediatric populations, including major spinal reconstruction for spinal deformity, and revision surgery. He also was fortunate to receive training in advanced minimally invasive surgery and motion preservation surgery as a part of the comprehensive fellowship program. Dr. Varma is an active member of the Scoliosis Research Society and dedicated faculty member within the Mount Sinai Department of Orthopedics where he is routinely involved in teaching medical students, orthopedic surgery residents, as well as fellows as part of the Sinai Spine Fellowship program. In 2017, he performed the first Oblique Lateral Interbody Fusion (OLIF) at Mount Sinai. He is routinely involved in teaching surgeons around the country as well as international surgeons, regarding these advanced techniques. His interests include complex spine surgery, revision spine surgery, and spinal deformity surgery, as well as the use of minimally invasive techniques in complex spine conditions to better facilitate patient recovery and improved patient outcomes. |

Reviews
I was unhappy with my experience with Dr. Varna. The office itself was fine, Toni (receptionist) and Crystal (nurse) were very nice and helpful; Dr. Varna on the other hand was interruptive and did not make proper time for me to explain my issues. He made assumptions about my health based on my age and gender during our conversation, and I did not feel that I was able to properly explain myself to give him an accurate picture of the situation at hand. The conversation was continuously interrupted by Dr. Varna's questions, while i was mid-sentence, and I would get cut off before I finished my full thoughts. In the end, I was referred to see another kind of specialist, a month of yoga classes, and to come back in six weeks if my situation hasn't improved which, for $350, is an absolute disgrace. This conclusion would’ve sufficed if I felt he had a comprehensive idea of the issue, but I did not. I felt like this appointment was rushed and inconclusive, which I would never expect at such a high self-pay price. Being a young woman and having to work hard to advocate for yourself to doctors is already difficult as is, and Dr. Varna was unsuccessful in making me feel like my issues were heard and properly addressed. The ridiculous medical bill just adds insult to injury. I will not be returning to this center and I would not recommend it to my friends or relatives.

Excellent facility and staff.
Dr. Varma is one of the medical professionals who I trust the most. He answers my many questions and has made excellent recommendations!
I had been suffering from cervical neck pain for over 20 years and felt that by going through all the self care steps I could potential heal myself. All the stretching, yoga, exercise and massage was just putting off the pain for the future. Once I started losing sensation in my hand I knew it was time for the next step. DR. Varma gave me the reassurance that this would be the right timing because apparently I’m still young enough to heal properly. Little did we know I had a bone spur this whole time. He was right. Fast forward to the procedure, he was very maticulous and a true professional. I am now 2 weeks out, slowly recovering and will without a doubt recommend him ti friends and family. WOOO!
Dr. Varma is an outstanding surgeon. But more than that, he took time to listen & understand issues that were specific to my life as a Personal Trainer & Group Exercise Instructor. He was concise, clear, & always realistic in his prognoses & follow-up advice. I very much appreciated the “zero bullshit factor”, & am grateful that the surgery performed has helped transform me back to the active individual I plan to be for years to come
Great!
Excellent. Patient, courteous, and explained everything thoroughly.
The doctor was thorough & helpful.

Incredible physician who managed to assuage my "medical phobias" with his articulate and forthright communication style, coupled with an authentic desire to hear me. Dr. Varma is very incisive and an empath who reads the room and people very quickly. I could tell from our introductory meeting that he's an innate caretaker, great mentor and an extremely hardworking person who excels at anything he puts his mind to. While I am a confident 45 year old, emboldened business owner who enjoys solving personnel and operational issues without worry, in the hands of anyone, anywhere medical/dental/vision, I am reduced to a fear-filled child, who becomes lost in worries of negligent mistreatment. Being in a medical environment is upsetting due to my childhood memories of a very "bad pediatrician." It took me 3 years to work up the courage to seek treatment for my back and sciatic nerve pain due to this chronic phobia. Dr. Varma made me feel "safer" with each appointment. I carefully researched his practice, the clinic, its staff, Dr. Varma's appearance, his rapport with patients, medical knowledge base and gained more faith, trust and confidence with each appointment leading up to a very successful lower spinal fusion surgery. I am working with a wonderful physical therapist and enjoying the challenge of recovery. About a month post-surgery, I am gaining mobility quicker than I thought I would. 5 stars is an inadequate rating for the empathic, intelligent, thoughtful and trustworthy surgeon that Dr. Varma is. I am grateful to be in his capable hands and believe my review should be shared directly with Dr. Varma. With respect and gratitude, Emmeline Sim
He was great to speak with and get feedback on my condition.
Dr. Varma hopes to correct my back pain with a minimally invasive procedure which might save me from have to undergo major surgery. I am all for that.
I have called Dr Varma six times for some non opeoid pain meds that he said he would call my pharmacy over one week ago. It was his suggestion. I do not rate that response very high.
I felt very well-informed after the visit.
❤️
Doctor Varma explain every detail answers I question about my lower back. I am very pleased service and would recommend him. The front desk receptionist was very helpful and polite. I give her A+.
Dr. Varma listens, then speaks. He’s honest, but not condescending. He informs you.
Logic, data driven doctor. Maybe too smart for the hyper emotional lay patient, but I only trust clinicians like Dr. Varma.
the The doctor addressed all of my issues regarding my problem and I felt very glad that I had gone to see him,
Positive and informative.
