Dr. Mathews obtained his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. He then remained in NY to complete his postgraduate internship and residency training in orthopedic surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, where he was named Chief Orthopedic Surgery Resident. Dr. Mathews completed his fellowship training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, specializing in adult lower extremity knee and hip reconstruction.
Dr. Mathews has extensive experience in joint replacement, having performed over 12,000 knee and hip replacement surgeries in his career. He is well-versed in minimally invasive knee and hip replacement techniques, as well as cutting-edge robotic surgery. He has performed thousands of same-day knee and hip replacements and partial knee replacements. He has expertise in hip resurfacing as well.
Dr. Mathews has many publications and presentations to his credit and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
Dr. Mathews is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and speaks fluent Greek and has good working knowledge of Spanish.
He maintains medical staff privileges at Texas Orthopedic Hospital, The Methodist Hospital, and Memorial City Hospital. He is present for all his surgeries, conducts daily rounds, and takes care of patients directly.

I saw doctor Mathews in January of 2019. At that time I had I was at a 64 BMI. Dr. Mathews saw how bad my knee wsd and gently suggested I think about getting weight loss surgery to get the weight off faster so I can get the this left knee replaced. I took about 4 months to think about it and realise I've tried so hard to get all this way off in never could quite get enough off so I had gastric bypass in September 2019 and I've lost a 157 pounds

There was a mix up with my online appointment but they got me in, paperwork filled out, X-ray taken and surgery scheduled. So far I’m very pleased.

Dr. Mathews & his staff had the most honest & pure professionalism I’ve ever seen in any medical field setting! Not one person I came across was rude or unprofessional during my visit & pre-op on this 5 story office/surgical hospital nor was any of it unprofessional or “confusing”! Everyone advised you on your next step with compassion & professionalism! It was warming in such a huge place! Dr Mathew’s bed side manner is the most friendly, professional & comforting in such a “scary” part of your life knowing your life is about to change from the day you make the appointment! I never felt scared today, not once! I just want to say thank you to all the staff & Doctors @ Texas Orthopedic Hospital for having such a well trained & friendly staff & for all you do to make you patients such as myself feel as comfortable as possible! Dr. Matthews was great as always. Disappointing that I couldn’t get a cortisone injection today but appreciated that they admitted they were 2 hours behind in radiology. I will go back Tuesday for the injection.
