Shields Callahan, MD is a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon practicing at Absolute Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center’s Chesterfield location. Dr. Callahan's particular areas of interest include skin cancer removal with the Mohs technique, high-risk tumors, reconstructive surgery, and secondary skin cancer prevention.
Dr. Callahan grew up in Roanoke, Virginia, and she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. She then attended medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. She remained in Chicago for her internship year at the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was nominated for “Intern of the Year.”
Following medical school and internship year in Chicago, she completed her dermatology residency at New York University, which is consistently ranked as the country’s top dermatology program. While a resident, Dr. Callahan was the recipient of the Morris Leider Award for Excellence in Dermatology which is given to the best overall senior resident. After residency, Dr. Callahan returned to Virginia to complete an additional year of specialized training in dermatologic surgery and reconstruction (Mohs surgery) at Virginia Commonwealth University under the mentorship of Dr. Algin Garrett.
Dr. Callahan has contributed to numerous publications, medical journals, and textbooks. She is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American College of Mohs Surgery, and the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery.
Prior to joining Absolute Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center, Dr. Callahan served as the Director of Dermatologic Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University in the Department of Dermatology, where she oversaw the treatment of a wide range of skin cancers. As an Assistant Professor, she oversaw the surgical training of the dermatology residents with hands-on tutorials, formal lectures, and clinical instruction at the bedside.
At Absolute Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center, Dr. Callahan treats all types of skin cancers, including the most common forms: Basal cell carcinoma, Squamous cell carcinoma, and Melanoma. In addition to these common types of skin cancer, she also treats rare tumors, pre-skin cancer lesions (actinic keratoses), sun-damaged skin, cysts, lipomas, and irregular moles.
Outside of work, Dr. Callahan enjoys running, yoga, traveling, cooking, and keeping up with her four children and husband.

Brilliant, personable, welcoming, skilled hands, warm and charming. Everything one could ask for Dermatologist and better. As long as I live, 79 now, I’ll be returning to her. Dr. Shields Callahan is absoloutly the best doctor that you will ever find. She is very kind and compassionate, and makes you feel totally at ease. When I was nervous and hot, she calmed me down. Gave me Ice packs, and even put her nice cool hands on my are to get me comfortable and happy again. Only a very concerned and caring would do that. She is "The Best Doctor that I have ever been to in my entire life"! She is a Great Doctor and is in a class that is way past Exceptional. I would recommend her to anyone. Very good explaining what was happening
All the staff were very nice. Good atmosphere.
I arrived 15 minutes early as instructed and, as I had previously provided documents and e-signed others on the Patient Portal, was shown to the surgery room about 5 minutes earlier than my scheduled appointment time. I was prepped for surgery by Claudia and within about 10 minutes, I met Dr. Callahan. She was personable, friendly, and very professional. We briefly discussed the plan for the surgery and the "what if's" that are possible in Mohs surgery. The initial excision was completed in about 10-15 minutes and I was left to await results of the microscopy. During this wait of about 45 minutes, I used the time to advise my wife and others of my status. I was advised that the microscopy indicated that the carcinoma was totally excised and that I would be "repaired" by Dr. Callahan. This "repair" was completed and Dr. Callahan explained the stitching, expected healing process, antibiotics regimen, etc. which was also largely repeated by Claudia after Dr. Callahan's departure. In short, I was extremely impressed with the physical facilities and the professionalism of the Absolute Dermatology staff and will highly recommend them if an opportunity to do so arises in the future.
