Shasta Van Sickle, PA-C is highly trained in many areas of medicine. She has been a Physician Associate (formerly Assistant) in Colorado for 15 years. Shasta believes in combining traditional medicine with nontraditional medicine to help patients achieve optimal health and wellness. She enjoys getting to know her patients on a personal level.
Shasta has been a PA since 2008 and initially worked in the Orthopedic Surgical setting, primarily in Spine Surgery for many years. This requires extensive medical knowledge as many of these patients need ICU care after their surgeries. Shasta transitioned from the surgical setting to the clinical office setting 5 years ago into Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation in order to have a more predictable schedule for her family and her 2 kids. She has been practicing Functional Medicine within PM&R by treating those with osteoporosis, fractures, and tendon tears with hormone treatment that helps to build bone. Shasta has also worked in many Urgent Care settings throughout the Denver Metro areas over the last 15 years to keep the knowledge and procedural skills active, such as laceration repair and acute illness (MedExpress, Advanced Urgent Care, and CareNOW).
Shasta was raised in a rural town in Northwest Arkansas and will always respect the hardworking and farming communities and still enjoys taking care of patients with this mindset and way of life. Shasta did move to Little Rock for her undergraduate degree as she was offered a scholarship on the Cross-Country & Track team where she ran for 5 years. She also had the opportunity to play collegiate basketball for 1 year. At the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Shasta graduated with a bachelor’s degree in science with a major in biology and minor in psychology/chemistry. She was initially planning to go to medical school and was accepted, but she ultimately chose to go to PA school instead. This choice was mostly based on her desire to be a mother and have a better work/life balance in the future. Shasta obtained her master’s degree in Physician Assistant studies at Stony Brook University in New York (Long Island).
Living in Little Rock and New York helped Shasta to understand cultural diversity and to better understand people and patients from different backgrounds and upbringings. However, at the end of PA school, Shasta’s boyfriend at the time (now husband) recruited her to Colorado, which was very easy to accept!
Shasta has received advanced certification in bioidentical hormone therapy from Dr. Neal Rouzier, one of the world experts on hormone therapy. She continues to learn and stay well informed on the most up-to-date medical recommendations and treatments around the country and world.
Shasta is also well trained in understanding lab results with interest in thyroid, hormones, osteoporosis, and lipids (cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL/HDL). She is very comfortable and trained in reading her own x-rays and MRIs, discussing cellular treatments such as PRP, performing ultrasound guided joint injections, ordering and explaining spinal injections, and interpreting EMG results.
Shasta also treats many autoimmune conditions and is very comfortable with thinking outside of the box. She treats those who have already been diagnosed with autoimmune illnesses, but she also likes to dig deeper to find the root cause of your symptoms to see if you too many have an autoimmune illness.
