Peter Fernandez, MD, is a double board-certified interventional pain physician in private practice at Sunshine Spine and Pain Specialists, PLLC, in Sarasota, Florida. He emphasizes the most advanced treatments combined with physical medicine to treat acute and chronic pain conditions.
A Florida native and graduate of Riverview High School in Sarasota, Dr. Fernandez brings the highest level of care to his hometown. He has extensive experience in all aspects of interventional pain medicine and has a particular interest in using minimally invasive procedures to treat spinal conditions, neurological pain, and musculoskeletal pain.
Dr. Fernandez obtained his Bachelor of Science in biology at Florida State University in Tallahassee. After receiving his medical doctorate at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina, he completed an anesthesia residency at Wake Forest University (WFU) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
He stayed at WFU to finish a fellowship in interventional pain medicine at Carolinas Pain Institute, one of the nation’s premier training programs. During his fellowship, he was involved in extensive clinical research and was trained in the most advanced approaches to interventional pain management.
Following his medical training, Dr. Fernandez served as an assistant professor of anesthesiology and pain medicine at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he participated in patient care and the training of medical students, residents, and fellows.
Although the teaching practice was fulfilling, the call of home was too great. In 2011, he returned to his hometown of Sarasota, focusing on providing personalized, high-level care to the community he loves.
Dr. Fernandez is board certified in anesthesiology and interventional pain medicine. He maintains active membership in many professional organizations, including the American Society of Anesthesiology, the American Society of Pain and Neuroscience, the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Florida Society of Interventional Pain Physicians.
In his free time, Dr. Fernandez enjoys physical fitness, playing the guitar, and fishing with his wife and two young boys.

I love this doctor
Today was an epidural at the S1 level. This follows a series of pain snore and nerve ablation above the S1 level. As a person, who at 76 years of age, had a lifelong aversion to needles in my spine, I can tell you that Dr. Fernandez and his entire staff made the experience virtually painless, answered every question, and exceeded all expectations.
Dr. Fernandez and his staff members are so kind and professional. His offices are well equipped to handle all your pain needs. I had an ablation to my spine after years of weight bearing pain. I am home resting but I can feel the difference already. If you have pain anywhere in your body, his care will give you your life back. Thank you all for your help with my years of anguish.
