About Dr. Matthew Coates, MD, FACS

Dr. Matthew Coates, FACS is a board certified general surgeon. He studied molecular and cell biology at the University of California at Berkeley as an undergraduate and then attended medical school at the University of Sydney in Australia. He completed his residency training in general surgery at San Joaquin General Hospital. His bariatric scope of practice includes laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic loop duodenal switch, and laparoscopic standard duodenal switch. Along with bariatric Dr. Coates also performs general surgery procedures including but not limited to hernia repair, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and laparoscopic colon resection. Dr. Coates is an Associate Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a candidate member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), and a member of the Stanislaus Medical Society. In addition, Dr. Coates has interests in other minimally invasive abdominal surgeries, trauma and critical care.
