About Jenny Hu, MD

Dr. Hu graduated from Duke University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Minors in Global Health and Chemistry. She received her Medical Degree from the University of California, San Diego where she spent an additional year obtaining a Master in Advanced Studies Degree in Clinical Research where she was awarded the National Institutes of Health TL1 grant. Since then, Dr. Hu has become a pioneer in cost-effectiveness research in the field of ophthalmology and has collaborated with many physician-scientists nationally leading to numerous publications and abstracts.

During her medical school career, she led the Border Health Project which provided much-needed screening exams and medical supplies to underserved areas near the Mexican border, and she also worked as an intern at the State Capitol where she reviewed and helped pass health policy bills. After completing her intern year in Internal Medicine at UCSF-Fresno, she went on to complete her ophthalmology residency at the world-class Shiley Eye Institute at the University of California, San Diego. During her time there, she was selected as a Starr E. Shulman Fellow to represent ophthalmologists at Capitol Hill, where she advocated for standardized quality of eye care for veterans and for increased accessibility of new treatments for patients.

Dr. Hu is passionate about being an advocate for her patients. She aims to provide top-notch comprehensive care by working closely together with patients to achieve their personalized goals in vision. “Vision is so crucial to how we enjoy life. It brings me great joy to be able to provide patients with new and improved vision, and to also be a guardian for this most important and precious sense.”

Dr. Hu specializes in premium cataract surgery, oculoplastic surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and refractive surgery including LASIK, PRK, and SMILE. During her residency, she had the privilege of training under Dr. Don Kikkawa and Dr. Bobby Korn, two world leaders in oculoplastic surgery. Additionally, she had the unique opportunity to refine her refractive surgery skills at the Balboa Naval Center, one of the first institutions to perform the SMILE procedure.

Dr. Hu is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. She is fluent in Mandarin and proficient in Spanish. In her free time, she enjoys figure skating, yoga, art, and writing about her food and travel experiences.
