Dr. Anthony Alexander was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He attended North Carolina Central University and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Dr. Alexander received the degree of doctor of medicine (MD) from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. He completed a general surgery internship at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. Dr. Alexander completed a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC. Upon completion of his residency program in PM&R he moved to Waterloo, IA where he worked as a staff physician/director of a rehabilitation unit. The unit specialized in the medical care of patients with brain/spinal cord injuries, strokes, neuromuscular diseases, catastrophic injuries, and chronic pain management. He later accepted the position of Medical Director at a large hospital based occupational medicine clinic and also opened a part time chronic pain private practice in Cedar Falls, IA. While in Cedar Falls, IA he began taking the required courses in Interventional Pain Management. Dr. Alexander began providing interventional pain management services to his acute and chronic pain patients in 1991.
In 2000 he moved to Myrtle Beach, SC and joined Strand Regional Specialty Associates, a large multispecialty group, where he continued to practice neuromuscular medicine and interventional pain management. Dr. Alexander later moved to Florence, SC and joined Pee Dee Orthopedic Associates. During his time there, he assisted in establishing the Pee Dee Spine Center where he offered conservative spine medicine and interventional pain management services to their patients. He also took courses and training in the non-surgical treatment of painful symptomatic varicose veins. He incorporated the treatment of symptomatic varicose veins of the lower extremities into his interventional pain practice. Dr. Alexander has therefore been able to offer pain relief and restore quality of life to many patients that suffer daily from painful varicose veins, as well as painful neuromuscular conditions.
