Dr. Thakral is a fellowship-trained Interventional Pain Medicine physician who is board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine. He is joining the team at the International Spine, Pain & Performance Center, and will be treating patients in both our Washington DC and Arlington Virginia locations.
Dr. Thakral was born and raised locally in northern Virginia. He earned his medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), where he then completed a General Surgery internship before moving to New Jersey for his Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) residency at Rutgers RWJMS - Hackensack Meridian JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute. During his final year of residency, Dr. Thakral was elected Academic Chief Resident. He completed an additional one year of training in an ACGME-accredited Pain Medicine fellowship at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute.
Dr. Thakral specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of spine and musculoskeletal injuries. He is passionate about using a comprehensive approach in treating his patients' pain. In addition to utilizing conservative measures such as personalized exercise and therapy programs, Dr. Thakral performs a variety of fluoroscopic and ultrasound-guided procedures, including to the back, neck, joints, and soft tissues. He takes pride in his ability to listen and connect with patients, helping create individualized treatment plans to improve his patients' functional abilities and to get back to the activities they love.
In his free time, Dr. Thakral enjoys playing tennis, running, hiking, exploring new restaurants, and hopelessly rooting for the Washington Commanders.

Great treatment, solved my back problem
Listens to the patient. Well studied and insightful into the challenges I face as a patient. His procedures have been effective in diminishing pain. Looks ahead toward what's next and works with patient to develop solutions that don't involve surgery or other invasive processes. I am always comfortable with him and look forward to visits because I know the discomfort and pain I experience is being effectively addressed.
I highly recommend Dr. Thakral. He was very responsive when I first injured myself, arranged for an immediate MRI, and pointed me in the right direction when I was ready for PT. He is caring, answers all questions and makes you feel that you are in good hands.
I was glad to see Dr. Thakral for my problems. He explained the causes of my problems , showed me the pictures and suggested treatment plans.

I really wish the pricing was discussed with me before the procedure. I was not expecting a $700 procedure and did not even imagine it would be that much (as a prior surgery with anesthesia cost less). I also felt like the follow up appointment was unnecessary. There wasn't anything done during that appointment that couldn't have been discussed over a quick 3 minute phone call. It was less than 15 minutes and I have to pay over $150 for it. Additionally, when they called to check in on me after the procedure, I had two concerns, one about billing and one about a symptom. They said they'd have people call me about both those things. Only the billing person reached out to me. It made me feel like all they cared about was money, and my actual progress and health concerns were not important.
