About Practice

Dr. John Pilavas is a Board-Certified Ophthalmologist serving patients throughout the Astoria, New York area. He specializes in the medical and surgical management of several optical disorders, and he also performs bladeless LASIK and PRK using the VISX® and Wavelight® excimer laser platforms. After earning his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and his medical degree from the University of Louisville School and medicine, he went on to:

• Complete an Internal Medicine Internship at Lenox Hill Hospital-Manhattan Eye, Ear, Throat

• Serve as Chief Resident at Nassau University Medical Center-SUNY Stony Brook

• Completed a Fellowship in Cornea, External Disease and Refractive Surgery at Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island

• Become a Certified user of the bladeless Femtosecond Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery using the CATALYS® platform

Dr. Pilavas’s distinct background enables him to lessen or even totally eliminate his patients’ dependence on eyeglasses or contact lenses. He also offers cutting-edge, effective treatment options for macular degeneration, glaucoma, and astigmatism. 

Aside from providing expert eye care at his private practice, he remains active in the wider ophthalmological community. Dr. Pilavas serves as a voluntary attending at Nassau University Medical Center, where he teaches residents about diagnosing and treating Cornea/External Disease. He’s also authored several peer-reviewed publications, presents his research throughout the United States, and reviews articles for Cornea, a peer-reviewed journal. He has also served as Sub-Investigator for several nationwide FDA trials.
