Going Green
Dr. W. Bradford Emery and Dr. Carol A. Scuro have been conserving and protecting nature’s greatest resource, the human body, for the last 42 years. Most of this has been with teeth and is accomplished through constant study and practice of new methods that restore while conserving. Dr. Scuro, for example has been providing orthodontic treatment for two decades so healthy teeth can be repositioned rather than replaced. In this same vein Dr. Emery places implants to restore missing teeth without having to cut into others. And this is only what goes on inside.
The building at 2184 Chili Avenue, which houses the dental practice, was built and won the Rochester home builders award for design in 1939. Although it requires work and repair Dr. Emery and Scuro conserve and maintain the original design of this landmark which won the Gates Civic beautification award in 2007 as a result. Consistent with every approach to their work, the dentists are excited to announce their latest effort to conserve nature as the first dental office in Monroe County to go green by installing a geothermal energy system.
Last year pipes stretching 300 feet below ground level were placed in the office yard. Things got a little exciting when drilling ran into an unforeseen pocket of natural gas and water deep below the surface. This unleashed a sulfurous geyser of gas and water, which took 24 hours for the department of environmental conservation’s hazmat team and the fire and police departments to safely contain. With the pipes in place, water which derives energy from deep underground circulates through the office to regulate the temperature in all seasons.
By using the natural temperature of the ground to heat or cool the air instead of energy consuming units, the only electricity required is to run a small fan that moves the air around. Installation of this required time and money but Dr. Emery and Scuro say that when they heard about this possibility they felt it was the right thing to do because it was consistent with their goal of conserving nature’s resources with their office and practice of dentistry.
