Dr. Karina Paonessa joined the NHST team in 2020 with a holistic approach to treating her patients. She believes that movement is medicine, and that every body has the potential to heal itself given the correct environment. Her goal is to provide patients the tools they need in order to help them reach their therapy goals. She does this through education, manual techniques, movement, and motivation while fostering a fun and healing environment.
Dr. Paonessa earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from West Coast University following her studies in Zoology with a minor in Spanish at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her interest in physical activity and movement started at a young age when she participated in many sports, landing on soccer, cross country, and track in high school. While attending UCSB, she joined the triathlon club team, intramural soccer, and completed 6 half marathons. She now fills her free time walking her dog by the beach, lifting weights, exploring hiking trails, attending concerts, and traveling.

Dr. Shiao-Lan Li, DPT, is a doctor of physical therapy at Minimally Invasive Medical Group, which has offices in Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, and Irvine, California. He performs regular physical therapy, outpatient evaluation, and treatment for orthopedic patients with all body parts. As a physical therapist, Dr. Li does not see separate issues relating to only one body part without relation to the rest of the body. Although a specific portion of the body may be the most obviously injured or restricted in its motion, other aspects of the body’s functioning are also immediately impacted, causing the formation of a specific compensatory pattern. The compensating pattern can result in limited recovery in the original area as well as possible future injury in the supporting area. Physical therapy achieves the highest success when treatment is focused on the restoration of the strength/muscle tone balance between the muscle groups, the coordination of the movement, and the elimination of compensatory patterns.
Dr. Li usually uses all possible tools, such as manual therapy, scraping, Yoga, traditional martial arts, etc., according to the patient’s individual situation to maximize the benefits of the therapy.

Leia Rispoli, MD, is an experienced interventional pain medicine physician who offers exceptional pain management and physiatry services to patients in and around Marina Del Rey and Newport Beach, California.
Double board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Pain Management, Dr. Rispoli has a profound empathy for patients suffering severe or prolonged pain. She uses innovative, non-surgical interventions alongside evidence-based treatments to restore function and reduce or eliminate her patients’ pain. Dr. Rispoli’s interest in the treatment of pain led her to complete an interventional pain medicine fellowship under the Weill Cornell Tri-Institute Pain Fellowship program in New York City, doing rotations at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Rispoli specializes in advanced neuromodulation (spinal cord stimulation) techniques, pelvic pain (both male and female), ultrasound-guided interventional procedures, and regenerative medicine techniques such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or stem cell therapy.
