Health Atlast approaches wellness differently. Together, Drs. Stephanie and Wayne Higashi, DC, had the vision of opening clinics that would provide the care and treatment they would want for themselves and their family. Where the best doctors are working together to provide the highest technology of health care all in one location.
Since graduating together in 2000, the practice took over a pre-existing practice in 2001 that had been in existence since 1987. They grew tremendously and soon found they needed more space and doctors to help keep up with the number of patients they were seeing.
Finding the need to provide a comprehensive approach to care and really needing to face the issue of a large number of medications prescribed, they built a team of board-certified medical doctors, chiropractors, acupuncturists, and massage therapists to provide multidisciplinary care for patients. The team at Health Atlast treats your pain, injury, and illness in a cohesive way. They work together as one to optimize your health, increasing the effectiveness of your therapy.
The Higashis saw the need to have this comprehensive approach in more than just West LA and out of seeing the opioid crisis, high suicide rates and overdose problem they together established in 2012, Health Atlast – the first multidisciplinary health care franchise in the world. Each Health Atlast franchisee has been personally selected and each clinic offers convenient office locations across the Los Angeles metro area, including West LA, which was established in 2014, serving Mar Vista, Culver City, and Venice, Marina Del Rey, Inglewood and Playa del Rey, area as well as clinics located in Sherman Oaks, Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley and Long Beach California. The team has helped thousands of patients find lasting relief through multidisciplinary pain and wellness management.
Patients often come to Health Atlast with messy histories of care. They have been prescribed multiple medications by numerous providers rather than receiving a complete treatment plan from one office. Founders Stephanie Higashi, DC, and Wayne Higashi, DC, created a medical clinic that offers patients holistic treatment options.
Health Atlast partners with you to better understand your condition and develop a custom treatment plan. They provide medical exams, chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, have onsite x-ray. They have arthritis treatment therapies, chiropractic services, migraine headache treatment, and more all under one roof.

Dr. Karina Paonessa joined the NHST team in 2020 with a holistic approach to treating her patients. She believes that movement is medicine, and that every body has the potential to heal itself given the correct environment. Her goal is to provide patients the tools they need in order to help them reach their therapy goals. She does this through education, manual techniques, movement, and motivation while fostering a fun and healing environment.
Dr. Paonessa earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from West Coast University following her studies in Zoology with a minor in Spanish at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her interest in physical activity and movement started at a young age when she participated in many sports, landing on soccer, cross country, and track in high school. While attending UCSB, she joined the triathlon club team, intramural soccer, and completed 6 half marathons. She now fills her free time walking her dog by the beach, lifting weights, exploring hiking trails, attending concerts, and traveling.
Tanner Roche, DPT, is a dedicated physical therapist at Natural Health Sports Therapy in Costa Mesa, California. He specializes in orthopedics and helps active individuals recover and thrive.
Growing up playing multiple sports, Tanner developed a passion for movement and recovery, which led him to pursue a career in physical therapy. After graduating from Huntington Beach High School, Tanner earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology from San Diego State University in California and continued there to complete his Doctorate of Physical Therapy.
During his clinical rotations, Tanner gained experience treating a wide variety of patients, but his passion for working with an active population solidified his focus on orthopedics. Inspired by his own experiences recovering from low back and shoulder injuries, Tanner is committed to helping patients overcome setbacks and return to the activities they love.
In his free time, Tanner enjoys playing beach volleyball, surfing, or relaxing by the ocean. During winter, he loves snowboarding at Mammoth and Bear Mountain.
Dr. Shiao-Lan Li, DPT, is a doctor of physical therapy at Minimally Invasive Medical Group, which has offices in Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, and Irvine, California. He performs regular physical therapy, outpatient evaluation, and treatment for orthopedic patients with all body parts. He also coordinates the patient treatment plans with chiropractics, pain management physicians, orthopedic doctors and primary physicians.
As a physical therapist, Dr. Li does not see separate issues relating to only one body part without relation to the rest of the body. Although a specific portion of the body may be the most obviously injured or restricted in its motion, other aspects of the body’s functioning are also immediately impacted, causing the formation of a specific compensatory pattern. The compensating pattern can result in limited recovery in the original area as well as possible future injury in the supporting area. Physical therapy achieves the highest success when treatment is focused on the restoration of the strength/muscle tone balance between the muscle groups, the coordination of the movement, and the elimination of compensatory patterns.
Dr. Li usually uses all possible tools, such as manual therapy, scraping, Yoga, traditional martial arts, etc., according to the patient’s individual situation to maximize the benefits of the therapy.
