He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of numerous other professional orthopaedic and medical societies. He has authored peer-reviewed journal publications and academic book chapters for orthopaedic surgery. This includes being the lead author for a shoulder chapter in the 2020 edition of Orthopaedic Knowledge Update: Shoulder and Elbow 5, a research-based text designed for orthopaedic surgeon education, published by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Dr. Scott has performed hundreds of shoulder and elbow surgeries annually since beginning practice in the Lowcountry in 2012 and has recently been voted “Best Orthopaedist” by residents in the local magazine. He is an avid reader and golfer and enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons.
Dr. Castro is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in orthopaedic spinal surgery at BOSS Orthopaedics in Beaufort, Hilton Head, and Bluffton, SC.
Dr. Castro earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees in Bioengineering from Clemson University in Clemson, SC and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Following medical school, he completed residency training in Orthopaedic Surgery at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY and went on to complete fellowship training in Complex Spinal Deformities at the University of Colorado.
During residency and fellowship training, Dr. Castro was very active in spinal biomechanics research. He has presented research at various national orthopaedic meetings and has numerous publications including journal articles and book chapters to his credit. Dr. Castro was awarded the John H. Moe Award from the Scoliosis Research Society. He remains actively involved in Spinal Biomechanics research and has designed and patented medical implants that are currently in use today.
Dr. Castro has extensive experience treating all disorders of the spine in both adults and children. Over the last 20 years he has developed one of the busiest spine practices in Denver, Colorado, and has been selected as one of Denver’s TOP DOCS. Dr. Castro is well-versed in and utilizes the latest surgical techniques including minimally invasive surgery and disc replacement. Dr. Castro typically exhausts non-surgical options prior to considering surgical intervention.
When not working, Dr. Castro enjoys fly fishing, boating, golf, and intermittently participating in IRONMAN events. His recent return to South Carolina was to be closer to family and friends.
Daniel J. Del Gaizo, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in adult reconstruction/ hip and knee replacement surgery. He is excited to be joining the well-respected Beaufort Orthopaedic Sports & Spine group, with offices in Beaufort, Bluffton, and Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Dr. Del Gaizo's practice philosophy is to care for his patients like family. From conservative non-operative treatments to complex joint reconstructive surgery, he works to address each patient's unique situation, goals, and expectations. He believes in providing a personalized experience that meets the highest standards of care.
Dr. Del Gaizo received his medical degree from The George Washington University in Washington, DC. He graduated at the top of his class and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) medical honor society. Dr. Del Gaizo then completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, followed by a fellowship in adult reconstruction/hip and knee replacement at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
During his fellowship, Dr. Del Gaizo trained with several world-renowned joint replacement surgeons, including Richard Berger, MD, Craig Della Valle, MD, Aaron Rosenberg, MD, and Wayne Paprosky, MD. Dr. Del Gaizo was then recruited to return to join the faculty at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. At UNC, he served initially as an assistant professor before being promoted to associate professor of orthopaedic surgery.
While at UNC, Dr. Del Gaizo was instrumental in establishing a busy hip and knee replacement program, educating and mentoring residents and medical students, and serving as a principal investigator in many clinical research trials. He was subsequently recruited to The Palmetto Health-USC Moore Clinic (later Prisma Health) Orthopedic Center in Columbia, South Carolina. There, he served as clinical associate professor of orthopedic surgery with The University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
Dr. Del Gaizo's clinical expertise includes all aspects of hip and knee replacement surgery, including minimally/less invasive techniques, direct anterior hip replacement, computer-assisted surgery, robotic-assisted surgery, custom implant joint replacement, partial knee replacement, patellofemoral knee replacement, revision knee replacement, and revision hip replacement. With over ten years of clinical experience, he has successfully performed thousands of joint replacement surgeries.
Dr. Del Gaizo is a member of The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), The South Carolina Orthopaedic Association, and The Southern Orthopaedic Association (SOA). He has numerous peer-reviewed publications and gives lectures locally, regionally, and nationally. In his free time, he enjoys exercising, being outdoors, traveling, food/wine, and spending time with his wife, Eryka, and their three children, Christopher, Rachel, and Matthew.
Mark Dean, MD, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with particular expertise in sports medicine and shoulder and knee injuries. He currently sees patients at Beaufort Orthopaedic Sports & Spine in Beaufort, Bluffton, and Hilton Head, South Carolina.
After completing his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University, Dr. Dean received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. He completed his residency training in orthopaedic surgery at Parkland Memorial Hospital and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. Subsequently, he did a fellowship in shoulder and knee surgery and sports medicine at the prestigious Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado.
Dr. Dean’s primary focus is sports medicine for active patients of all ages, with an emphasis on rehabilitation and surgical reconstruction of shoulder and knee injuries. Over the past 20 years, he has performed more than 14,000 surgeries on adult and pediatric patients, including high school, college, and professional athletes, as well as senior athletes.
Dr. Dean has lectured at the regional and national levels on orthopaedic topics with particular emphasis on shoulder and knee injuries, skiing, tennis, and golf-related injuries. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has served as a board member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Fellowship Exam Committee. Additionally, he has contributed many academic articles and book chapters to such publications as the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Review, and the Handbook of Sports Medicine.
Locally, Dr. Dean serves as the team physician for many area high school athletic teams and as a consultant to elite tennis and golf academies. He has also served as a team physician for the Denver Broncos, the United States Disabled Ski Team, the US Pro Ski Tour, and the US Olympic Ski Team. He is married to Brooke Dean, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist, and has three children, Hunter, Elise, and Jenna.
Scott E. Strohmeyer, MD, is board certified in orthopaedic surgery, specializing in the evaluation and treatment of adult and pediatric spinal disorders. He is proud to serve patients at Beaufort Orthopaedic Sports & Spine in Beaufort, Bluffton, and Hilton Head, South Carolina.
After graduating with honors from Auburn University, Dr. Strohmeyer received his medical degree from the University of South Alabama (USA). He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery from USA and completed his fellowship training in spine surgery at Louisiana State University.
Dr. Strohmeyer’s clinical interests include all disorders of the degenerative spine. He has a special interest in conservative non-operative treatment of spinal disorders, which allows his patients to continue an active lifestyle. When possible, Dr. Strohmeyer utilizes minimally invasive techniques to ensure a quick recovery.
He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is a member of the North American Spine Society and South Carolina Spine Society. He continues to be active with the AO Foundation in teaching new advances in spinal care and new surgical techniques.
Dr. Strohmeyer is married to Dr. JoAnn Csakany, a board-certified OB/GYN, and they have two daughters, Abigail and Mary Alice.
