His most common shoulder procedures include rotator cuff repair, labral repairs, biceps tenodesis and superior capsular reconstructions. He and his anesthesia team, have championed a new approach of shoulder surgery without general anesthesia.
His practice also encompasses a variety of sports medicine procedures treating common injuries of the elbow, hip and knee. Dr. Lewis’ surgical skills also include all-inside arthroscopic ACL reconstructions in the knee, Tommy John procedures in the elbow, and arthroscopic hip procedures.
Dr. Lewis is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and maintains professional memberships in the Arthroscopy Association of North America, Southern Orthopaedic Association, Florida Orthopaedic Society and Florida Medical Association.
Thomas Powell, MD, is a physician who specializes in orthopedic surgery. He diagnoses and treats patients at Powell Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. He is also affiliated with Brookwood Baptist Health, serving the Birmingham metro area and surrounding cities. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and a diplomate of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has expertise in arthroscopic surgery and special interests in trauma, sports medicine, and adult reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Powell earned his medical degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in 1991. He completed his internship and orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1996.
Dr. Powell has served as the chairman of the department of surgery, the credentials committee chairman, and the medical staff president at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham. He currently serves on the AO/ASIF orthopedic faculty.

A native of Mobile, Alabama, Dr. Powell was a four-year football letterman at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, where he was first-team All-American his senior year. He enjoys outdoor activities, spending time with his family, and participating in music and mission opportunities through his church.
