“I allowed this office to perform a hysteroscopy on me, but almost canceled due to the sheer carelessness and disrespect displayed by the office staff. My first appointment was in August and I had to pay for 4 visits and spend $500 before I was ever placed on the schedule for the “correct” procedure. The issue was with an IUD that was placed by another doctor. It’s extremely painful and I shed several tears in this office because of incorrect placement. Regardless of my first-hand account, the doctor refused to move forward without having me come to the office (and pay) to review my ultrasound records - not even to get in the stirrups.
After the initial 2 visits, I attempted to expedite the process (chased down both doctors to make sure they were actually communicating, so I wouldn’t waste money on a 3rd empty visit). The day of the 3rd appointment I called to make sure the records arrived. I was told they were received and that my appointment would go on as scheduled. Reality: I waited 3 hours before being seen because they still weren’t there. My half day off turned into a full day of money lost. The receptionist admitted that she lied to get me into the office, but was “glad it all worked out”. She then scheduled my IUD removal and I returned for yet another appointment. The next was even less fruitful, as the visit was scheduled without consideration from their technician, so I got there and was told no one was there to do the procedure, and I would have to wait another month before I could be seen. I cried, but said okay and the appointment was set for early October. This time, it would be coded as a hysteroscopy rather than an IUD removal because it couldn’t be easily removed.
The day before,n o one sent instructions, called to confirm, or even see if I still wanted the procedure done. Brenda the receptionist was condescending and disrespectful when I called to get these pieces of information and seemed very inconvenienced once she realized who I was on the phone. This was somehow a relief after she acted like she had never heard my name or the details of a procedure that was just 18 hours away.
I did let her know that I didn’t feel great about moving forward with the hysteroscopy because of my experience and that I was frustrated by the lack of communication. It just felt like they weren’t invested in my care nor were they concerned for my time, but I was in a pinch. Instead of listening to my concerns to assuage me, she overtalked me and placed me on hold while I was mid-sentence. Horrible bedside manner, Brenda!! It is also worth mentioning that Brenda said a biopsy might not even be performed during the hysteroscopy (that’s literally what the procedure is for - not removing IUDs), but that the doctor would visually determine whether she would do it on the spot. Why code and bill for a procedure that may not be performed? It costs $600 - you kind of owe it to me to do the due diligence if you’re already going all the way in my cervix, but she said there are no guarantees. I guarantee they’ll take my money before I have a chance to even sit down in the lobby, though.
Let’s say the quiet part out loud. I signed up to go to THIS doctor and waited several months for an appointment thinking that my needs were going to be taken seriously and that I’d be treated with respect because the doctor/staff is a Black woman and so am I. The truth is that this is the most hostile experience I’ve had with ANY doctor’s office. Ever.
If I were to cancel the appointment, I feel like I would’ve gilted myself out of the care I needed, and have been begging multiple doctors for, over the last year. Every interaction with the doctor and staff felt like a negotiation rather than me simply explaining my experience and exploring solutions together. I’m typing this the day before my procedure, wondering why I’m letting them do this to me and whether it’s even safe. I’m praying that whatever happens tomorrow doesn’t affect my fertility long-term, but I will certainly NOT be visiting this office again.
Update: On the day of the appointment, I instructed the doctor to be sure to take samples for the biopsy, as I had already paid associated costs. It only makes sense to do the actual procedure I’m being charged for, rather than just having the IUD pulled out. After about an hour of fishing for the device, she of course forgot, then waited until I was off the table to ask if I wanted her to start over, so the sample could be taken. Obviously, I didn’t want to have anyone pass my cervix again that day, so I said no thank you and was instructed to get dressed. No one came back to check on me so I proceeded to the checkout desk to see if there was any follow-up appointment or instructions. Nobody came, so I had to go to the front desk to ask if it was okay to leave. The receptionist called the doctor and she sent the very nice Hispanic nurse to console me. The sweet lady gave me a hug and that was it. No aftercare. I will never EVER go here again - you couldn’t pay me.”
