Y. Joseph Usta, MD, was born in Iowa City, Iowa, and raised in Aramco, on an American compound in Dhahran Saudi Arabia. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Arizona in Molecular and Cellular Biology prior to graduating from medical school at the American University of Beirut. He completed a year of pancreatic cell transplant research at Emory University in Atlanta GA, before relocating to Phoenix, Arizona where he completed his Internal Medicine training at St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Center. He then went on to complete his Fellowship in Gastroenterolgy and Hepatology at the University of Arizona - Banner Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. Over the years, Dr. Usta served as an Assistant Professor for both the University of Arizona and Creighton Medical School.

He was recognized by the American College of Physicians (ACP) as a "Rising Star". He presented an abstract to the 2015 American College of Gastroenterology's (ACG) Annual Scientific Meeting, on his clinical research on the association between Barrett's Esophagus and Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam Veterans.
