Sohail Shayfer, MD, gradualted summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with an undergraduate degree in biology from the University of California, Irvine. He then earned his Doctor of Medicine with Alpha Omega Alpha hononrs from the David Geffen School of Medicine at the Univeristy of California, Los Angeles.
After medical school, Dr. Shayfer went through his internship and orthopedic residency training through the Tufts University-affiliated hospitals in Boston. He completed two additional fellowships at USC: one in hand surgery through the Joseph H. Boyes program, followed by a fellowship in sports medicine with an emphasis on disorder of shoulder and elbow.
To ensure that his patients receive the latest treatments and care techniques, Dr. Shayfer underwent stringent board testing. A regional leader in shoulder surgery, Dr. Carofino currently performs over 150 shoulder replacements per year. This is the highest volume of any surgeon in the Hampton Road’s area and among the top 5% nationally. Dr. Carofino is also highly skilled in minimally invasive shoulder surgeries such as rotator cuff repairs, labral repairs and superior capsular reconstruction. His surgical practice attracts patients from throughout the state of Virginia as well as out of state.
Dr. Carofino is a team physician for the Norfolk Tides and serves as a consultant to Norfolk State University athletic department. He frequently treats shoulder and upper extremity injuries in high-level athletes in baseball, volleyball, football and tennis. In addition to his surgical treatments, he offers professionally guided accelerated rehabilitation programs.
Clinical research is a passion of Dr. Carofino’s and he is committed to developing better techniques to treat shoulder and upper extremity injuries. He has presented his research at national and international meetings and is involved in educational programs to teach advanced shoulder surgery techniques to other physicians. Dr. Carofino has also served as a reviewer for The Bone & Joint Journal and Clinical Orthopaedics and Realted Research.

Elliot Decker, MD, is a highly respected and fellowship-trained physician who specializes in hand and wrist surgery at MidJersey Orthopaedics in Flemington, New Jersey.
Dr. Decker graduated from Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York, earned his medical degree from Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and finished his studies with a residency at New York Medical College and St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City.
He’s also completed numerous fellowships, including a fellowship in hand surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, and a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts. He also holds leadership positions in several institutions, serving as a member of the board of trustees for the United States Department of Health and Human Services, the vice-chairman of the Harrisburg Medical Center Foundation, and a past president of the Hunterdon County Medical Society.
