Ghayas Habach, MD, MPH, is a board-certified nephrologist serving patients at Merit Health Care, PC, with offices in Sylacauga and Talladega, Alabama. He has practiced internal medicine and nephology for almost 25 years and holds himself and his treatment of others to high standards.
Dr. Habach became interested in medicine during his adolescence after witnessing the compassion and sincerity displayed by a physician in his family. Driven by a strong motivation to learn and succeed, Dr. Habach was determined to become a physician and impact the lives of many.
He completed medical school at Damascus University in Damascus, Syria, and a one-year externship in London, England. After graduating from medical school, Dr. Habach served as a program officer for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Damascus, where he played a pivotal role in immunizing 1.3 million Syrian children.
Dr. Habach's deep interest in healthcare policy and public health aspects influenced him to pursue a Master of Public Health (MPH) at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He then completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Connecticut and a nephrology fellowship at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Habach believes physicians have a duty to educate, teaching patients how to care for their health, not only alleviating symptoms and prescribing drugs. He also believes physicians should be role models who demonstrate the ideals of ethics, righteousness, and compassion in every aspect of their lives. These are the ideals Dr. Habach has strived to embody for the last 25 years and continues to strive towards with enthusiasm and focus.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Habach enjoys reading poetry and history, playing tennis, and listening to music, especially James Taylor. He also enjoys spending time with his children and watching them grow into independent and passionate individuals.
