Dr. Katerina Warda graduated Magna Cum Laude at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with an Emphasis in Physiology and a minor in Chemistry. She obtained a master’s in biomedical science at Midwestern University in Glendale, AZ. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Warda continued her education at Midwestern and received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree. During her first year of training, she was inducted into the Sigma Sigma Phi Society.
After graduation, she completed her internal medicine internship at the State University of New York- Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY. Here, she worked as an intern during the height of COVID, working in the intensive care unit and hospital floors. For this dedication, the department was awarded Department of the Year.

With over 19 years of experience in cutaneous oncology and dermatologic surgery, Maya K. Thosani, MD, brings not only her clinical expertise but her light-hearted, compassionate approach to MODERN Dermatology, which has offices in Scottsdale, Arizona near the Shea and Osborn Hospital campuses.
Dr. Maya Thosani did her undergraduate training at Columbia University, except for the semester abroad in Spain where she gained fluency in Spanish. She then attended Rutgers Medical School and was honored to be one of a handful of students elected by her peers and professors to serve in the Gold Humanism Honor Society.
After completing a rigorous internship at New York University’s Downtown Hospital in Manhattan, she remained in NYC completing three years of dermatology residency and served as a Chief Resident at Stony Brook University Hospital. During these 3 years she spent her time divided between University Hospital, the Veterans Affairs hospital, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering (MSK) Skin Cancer Center.
In pursuit of advanced surgical training, Dr. Thosani completed a demanding one-year accredited fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery in Cincinnati under the mentorship of Dr. Brett Coldiron. During this year, Dr Thosani also spent time training at the hospital with plastic surgeons, head & neck surgeons, and oculoplastic surgeons in the operating room. While Mohs micrographic surgeons are not considered “plastic surgeons” – their training overlaps considerably regarding facial reconstruction after surgical removal of cancers. Dr. Thosani’s clinical interests involve cutaneous oncology and the use of dermoscopy as a non-invasive tool for early detection of skin cancer.
She regularly attends the Cutaneous Oncology Tumor Boards at Honor Health and participates in select research studies. She is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, Phoenix Dermatologic Society, and a fellow of the Mohs College. She has done over 15,000 Mohs micrographic surgeries, as well as countless other surgical procedures. She is double board certified in both Dermatology and Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery.
Her personal interests include spending time with her husband and three children. She is passionate about health and wellness – believing that there are many factors that influence our bodies and minds – especially nutrition and movement. She spends a great deal of time cooking and making healthy delicious recipes, going to yoga daily, and traveling with her family and friends. Golf, skiing, biking and hiking are some of the new passions she has been fortunate enough to pursue since moving to the Valley in 2014!

Rajiv Kwatra, MD, is board-certified in dermatology and micrographic dermatologic surgery. Dr. Kwatra sees patients at Dermatology Associates, a private medical practice in Phoenix, Arizona, and provides them with high-quality, individualized care.
Dr. Kwatra grew up in Tampa, Florida, and Toledo, Ohio. He attended the University of Florida in Gainesville for college, majoring in History.
After completing medical school at Ohio State University, Dr. Kwatra moved to the valley and interned in internal medicine at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He returned to Ohio State to train in dermatology.
During his residency at Ohio State, Dr. Kwatra developed a strong interest in diagnosing and treating skin cancer. For this reason, Dr. Kwatra underwent additional fellowship training in the surgical treatment of skin cancer using Mohs Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston.
After completing his fellowship, Dr. Kwatra returned to Phoenix to settle permanently. Since then, Dr. Kwatra has treated approximately 40,000 cases of skin cancer with Mohs surgery.
Dr. Kwatra is a Fellowship trained in Mohs Micrographic Surgery and skin cancer treatment.
He is a member of the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS), the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), the American Medical Association (AMA), the Phoenix Dermatologic Society, and the Maricopa County Medical Society (MCMS).

James Yi Gao, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist and acne specialist accepting new patients at Dermatology Associates, a private medical practice in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Gao provides patients with personalized and advanced dermatological care and takes ample time to tailor his recommendations.
Dr. Gao grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. He completed his undergraduate degree at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and then attended medical school at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine (CCLCM) in Cleveland, Ohio.
During medical school, Dr. Gao completed a clinical research fellowship on skin cancer in immune suppressed patients and health disparities at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF).

Outside of work, she enjoys playing tennis, hiking and going on long walks. She likes to paint as well as complete jigsaw puzzles. Above all, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends especially her three nieces who reside in Phoenix. She is excited to bring her experiences from NY to AZ and continue caring for those in her community.
Justin Sawyer, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist who focuses on general dermatology, skin cancer detection, prevention, and treatment. He offers expert care to patients at Skin Care Specialists in Mesa, Arizona.
Dr. Sawyer is originally from east central Illinois. After graduating valedictorian from Mattoon High School, he attended Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, where he majored in biology. He then returned to Illinois, where he received a full congressional scholarship to the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago.
After an internship in internal medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, Dr. Sawyer moved to Arizona for his dermatology training. He has been practicing in Mesa since finishing his dermatology residency at the University of Arizona in 2002 in Tucson.
Dr. Sawyer received the highest score in the country on the American Board of Dermatology recertification exam.
At Skin Care Specialists, Dr. Sawyer enjoys helping his patients understand their skin conditions so that the best course of treatment can be selected. In his free time, he enjoys watching Duke basketball, researching diet and exercise science, and spending time with his wife and their two children.
Brian Wanner, DO, is a board-certified dermatologist, Mohs micrographic surgeon, and reconstructive surgeon at Skin Cancer Specialists, located in Mesa, Arizona.
Dr. Wanner grew up in Sioux City, Iowa. He attended the University of Colorado, where he studied integrative physiology and graduated with distinction. He then completed medical school at Des Moines University in Iowa, where he was inducted into the Sigma Sigma Phi National Honor Society and received the Academic Achievement Award for graduating at the top of his class.
After medical school, Dr. Wanner moved to Florida for an internship at the University of South Florida's Largo Medical Center Program in Tampa. He then moved to Columbus, Ohio, for his dermatology residency at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital, where he was elected chief resident and received the OhioHealth Kylee Sacksteder Leadership Award during his final year.
Post-residency, Dr. Wanner attended a highly sought-after Mohs micrographic surgery and dermatologic oncology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania. He is expertly trained in skin cancer removal, Mohs micrographic surgery, management of high-risk solid organ transplant patients, and facial reconstruction after skin cancer removal. He has performed more than 2,000 skin cancer surgeries throughout his career, many with complex reconstructions.
Dr. Wanner has published numerous research articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented his work at state and national conferences. He is also an active member of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).
Dr. Wanner has helped improve the quality of care provided by dermatologists nationwide through his work on the AAD’s Performance Measurement Committee and Actinic Keratosis Quality Measures Workgroup.
During his time off, Dr. Wanner enjoys golfing, hiking, bicycling, skiing/snowboarding, and spending quality time with his wife and son.
Daniel Skinner, MD, is board-certified in dermatology and Mohs micrographic surgery. He provides expert care at Skin Cancer Specialists, located in Mesa, Arizona.
Dr. Skinner is a 5th-generation Arizonan who grew up in Mesa and graduated from Mountain View High School. He went on to attend Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where he graduated with a degree in business management. He then attended the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson, where he developed an interest in dermatologic surgery.
During medical school, he was a leader and volunteer in many different medical school organizations. He completed a one-year internship in internal medicine at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, and a three-year dermatology residency at the University of Missouri in Columbia, where he served as chief resident in his final year. He has presented research at many local and national meetings and has published research on the use of Mohs surgery for rare skin cancer, as well as a book chapter on dermabrasion.
Dr. Skinner concluded his training with an intensive one-year fellowship in Mohs micrographic and dermatologic surgery in Birmingham, Alabama, with Dr. Christopher Harmon, one of the nation's leading Mohs surgeons. Dr. Skinner has performed over 10,000 skin cancer surgeries. In addition to training in Mohs surgery and skin cancer removal, he has expertise in facial reconstruction after skin cancer removal.
Dr. Skinner is currently the president of the Phoenix Dermatology Society and on the board of directors of the Arizona Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery Society. In addition, he is very active in volunteer work for his church and enjoys spending time playing and watching sports.
When he is not at work, Dr. Skinner enjoys spending time with his wife, Marie, and their six children.

In addition, Dr. Skinner was elected by his peers to be the President of the Phoenix Dermatology Society, a group of over 150 dermatologists in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Jennifer Peterson, DO, is a board-certified dermatologist skilled in general, medical, and cosmetic dermatology and excels in treating a wide range of dermatological conditions. At Skin Care Specialists, Dr. Peterson works out of theTempe andScottsdale, Arizona locations.
Dr. Peterson treats patients of all ages, from infants to adults. She takes a comprehensive, holistic, and personalized approach to dermatological care, working with patients to address their skin concerns and considering how these issues might affect their overall health.
Dr. Peterson’s commitment to dermatology began when she was a patient herself. As a teenager, she struggled with acne, and after she received expert dermatological care, she was inspired to become a dermatologist.
She received her undergraduate degree in health sciences in physiology from the University of Arizona in Tucson and her medical degree from Touro University Nevada in Henderson. During her graduate training, Dr. Peterson received several honors for her clinical clerkship appointments, including the dean’s list.
Dr. Peterson completed her dermatology residency at Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona. During that time, she served as chief resident and received training in pediatric dermatology while rotating at Phoenix Children’s Hospital in Arizona. Here, Dr. Peterson was also awarded numerous accolades for excellence, as well as for her dedication to serving as a peer mentor and role model.
Her passions include community education and outreach programs. Dr. Peterson participated in free community skin cancer screening clinics during Skin Cancer Awareness Month. She also helped the dermatology initiative at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital, known as St. Andrew’s Children’s Clinic in Arizona.
Beyond her dermatological interests, Dr. Peterson also enjoys international travel, fitness, reading, cooking, and cheering on the Wildcats.
